Man dies after being attacked by a dog just days after it was returned to its owner by police

Victim, 52, was savaged as he 'shielded his terrier dog from the staffy-lab cross'

A MAN has died after being attacked by a dog in West Yorkshire – just seven days after it was returned to its owner.

The 52-year-old victim was savaged as he shielded his terrier from a Staffy-Labrador cross during a stroll yesterday morning.

He suffered severe bite wounds during the attack in Huddersfield at around 9.45am and died in hospital last night.

The staffy-lab was found in a nearby garden and its owner, 29, was arrested.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed the dog had been returned to its owner on August 8 after it was seized by cops in June over concerns it was a banned breed.

The suspect dog has been detained by police and the Yorkshire Terrier was also injured in the attack.

The incident in the Sheepridge area of the town has been referred to the IPCC.

Neighbour Kathryn Cuniffe saw the man being mauled by the rampaging dog.

The mum-of-two, 29, told the Huddersfield Examiner: “It was horrific.
“I was shaking like a leaf for a good while afterwards. We were all just helpless.”

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Swift, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “Clearly our thoughts go out to the family at this tragic time.

“They are understandably devastated by what has happened and are being supported by specially trained officers.

“Our investigation is continuing. We believe that the victim was out with his own dog at the time of the attack near to his home address on Riddings Road.

“His dog, a Yorkshire Terrier was also injured during the incident and received emergency veterinary care.”
